Birmingham, England, 1919. The Shelby family lead the Peaky Blinders - a feared gang named for their practice of sewing razor blades into the peaks of their caps. Until now they have made money from illegal bookmaking, protection and the black market. But when a crate of guns goes missing from the local arms factory, Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy) recognises an opportunity to move up in the world.
As rival gangs, Communist revolutionaries and IRA Fenians descend on the city in pursuit of the weapons, Winston Churchill dispatches a ruthless police chief from Belfast to impose order on an increasingly lawless city and recover the guns.
The second series will see the Shelby family expand their empire South and North while maintaining a stronghold in their Birmingham heartland. Thomas' attempts to make the business legitimate will be undermined by sinister forces. Meanwhile his ascent into the decadent high society of ‘20s England will be fuelled by his gangster credentials.
Peaky Blinders season one was the first recipient of finance from the new £7.5m Yorkshire Content Fund, which is managed by Screen Yorkshire.
Peaky Blinders boasts a distinguished cast that includes Cillian Murphy (The Dark Knight, Inception, The Wind That Shakes The Barley, 28 Days Later), Sam Neill (The Tudors, The Piano, Jurassic Park), Helen McCrory (Hugo, Harry Potter, The Queen), Annabelle Wallis (Snow White and the Huntsman, The Tudors), Paul Anderson (The Firm), Iddo Goldberg (Secret Diary of a Call Girl) and Charlie Creed-Miles (Nil By Mouth, Wild Bill). Writer and dub poet Benjamin Zephaniah also joins the cast.
